OK it may be the case i've been very lucky and got one that works better than the other people reviewing this item. I have noticed the slow response time when using the freeview, which is bad, but doesn't make the device unusable.
I think if you will use this for freeview, you will experience problems, however using this with sky etc, this should be fine. In the areas that matter like picture quality and sound, i cannot fault this drive and the functionality is extensive.

I was amazed to read the reviews by the others here.
I have had this unit a while now and never had a moments trouble with it! It works well and the timer menu is easy to use. Not sure why people complain about the little front panel display because you don't use that you use the on-screen menus!
Yes there is a delay from the remote in some respects like if you press 1 for channel one you have to wait but if you press 001 it is instant. Yes some of the menu options take a second or two ... Read More

I went out and bought the SH873M to match my Samsung TV, got it home and wow, what a disappointment. You can't read the display on the front (not that it gives any useful information if you could), the EPG is SLOW if it works at all, the picture keeps freezing and the sound goes out of sync, and when you load a DVD it sounds like an aircraft landing. Just horrible to use in every way.
Maybe a software update might help, but my solution: Get your money back and buy a Sony RDRHXD 890, a few quid ... Read More

I have to agree with the three other people above, the epg is soooo slow and the function from the remote are beyond slow. If you want to quickly set the recorder before you go out allow 15 mins.
but...if all you want to do is play dvd's back in 1080p upscaling, then its fantastic.

I read a positive review of this product and to say it was totally misleading is putting it mildly. This was purchased with my Samsung LE40A656 but NOT from Amazon
Where do I start.
The unit is unresponsive to the remote. This then leads to the the classic issue in that you press a button multiple times thinking that the button press has not been registered, but of course it has.
