An great HDD/DVD unit, only the lack of a second digital tuner stops it being perfect.
It has true Plug & Play capability, recordings are easy with choice to HDD or DVD. Transfers are simple, and the quality of the auto chaptering is excellent making it really easy to edit out the adverts before saving stuff to DVD.
The HDD is immense taking a couple of hundred hours of recording and very high quality. I can't praise its abilities enough.

Rating: - Nice machine, pity about some details
Overall a really nice machine, however it does have a number of drawbacks.
As has already been mentioned the difference in price for the larger hard disk is unfairly inflated, but many manufacturers/suppliers sadly pull this stunt. The inability to copy movies to the hard disk is a very annoying and unnecessary design decision, but lets hope with the gradual demise of DRM that future models may reconsider this functionality.

Rating: - overpriced
The only difference between the RDR-HXD1070 and the 970 and 870 is, by Sony's
own admission, the internal disk size. Which is an industry-standard
SATA disk anyway. The models even run the same firmware!
I therefore don't see how Sony can justify a price markup of between 60%
and 100% (depending on where you buy) between the 1070 and the 970.
Additionally, the devices, although DivX certified, will only play DivX
