Yes it can do the basic recording... however, this machine has a lot of problems. E.g. when you start a "timer" recording it will NOT alow you to stop it. And if you enter the wrong details, like I did a couple of times, I had to wait for hours until the wrong recording was completed!

I have to agree with Spine Candy as I too have had issues with the DVD side of the unit. the DVD drive in my unit has also given up the fight and is now rejecting all DVD's.

Purchased this unit 4 months ago and was very pleased with it: multi-region, great design, easy to use, large storage capacity.
In the last 6 weeks the unit has gone from occasionally rejecting dvd-r/rws, to rejecting all blank dvds (of many varieties), to the point where it cannot even read pre-recorded dvds (and makes a horrible noise when doing so). While the hard drive still works a system error also occurs every few days.

A superb piece of technology, huge storage capacity and it does everything it says it does!! I have always been fond of Samsung and being able to watch and record at the same time, multi region too is just superb value for money.

However, beware those of us who have an analog mind in a digital world.
In UK I run the operations of a large japanese toy company and I would have fired whoever wrote the instruction manual. It's crap.
The initial set-up details are fine, but when you start to record, where are the instuctions on on how to finalase the disc?
